Assignments

There will be two assignments this session: Items marked with the hash sign (#) will be activated during the course.

Questions?

Please read the specification carefully before asking questions. If you believe that there is an error in the specification or if it is incomplete or imprecise, please email cs9243@cse.unsw.edu.au. Please refer to the Linux manual pages for details about the various system calls and library functions, or consult the tutorial material on the resources page. Questions of general interest will not be answered individually, but by email to the class list, on the forum, and/or an entry into the FAQ section of the assignment. Please allow three working days for the processing of assignment-related questions.

General Assignment Guidelines

  • All assignment submissions must be coded in ANSI C or Erlang as determined by the assignment specification.
  • Submissions will be tested on our vina cluster (hostnames vina00 to vina19). Marks will be awarded on the basis of performance on the vina cluster and no other machines. The cluster runs Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (kernel version 2.6.21.6-general) with gcc 4.2.3, glibc 2.7, and Erlang 5.6.3.
  • All code must be well documented and structured; otherwise, penalties will apply.
  • The submission instructions for assignments (e.g., filenames, build process, usage of executables, etc.) must be exactly followed; otherwise, up to 10% of the full mark for that assignment may be lost.
  • The penalty for late submission of assignments is 6% of the maximum possible mark per day of being late. (Note that this is deducted from the achieved mark, not the maximum achievable mark - see the course outline page for an example.)
  • No assignment will be accepted later than one week after the deadline.
  • There are harsh penalties for plagiarism (e.g., copying and teamwork outside of official assignment teams), including 0FL for the whole course. Please see the course outline page for details.

The above conditions are not negotiable. Deadline extensions will only be granted in serious cases, where a fully documented request for special consideration is lodged with UNSW Student Central (formerly NSQ) within 3 working days of the incident (e.g., illness).
